The George Mason University AMS Chapter

An American Meteorological Society Chapter is coming to George Mason University!

We had previously announced George Mason University is expecting to receive a brand new atmospheric science major within the next school year. Along with this new program, ForecastGMU is working with GMU’s Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences department to establish our very own student chapter of the American Meteorological Society.
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) promotes the development and distribution of information and furthers the advancement of atmospheric and oceanic sciences. AMS works towards the progression of the atmospheric field within the professional scientific community. The nation-wide Society is made up of local and student chapters, which provide a strong foundation for the organization.  Local AMS chapters are established to increase public awareness of meteorology and related fields.
The George Mason University AMS chapter will seek to continue the advancement of atmospheric education in the region by taking on both a service and educational role. Our goal is to advance public awareness of the changing weather patterns and climate. Our surrounding region can benefit from a communal scientific society devoted to the dissemination of metrological information and research.  There is much more to meteorology and atmospheric science then just forecasting the weather; with a student AMS chapter we can begin to inform the surrounding community and university population of all the diverse fields and aspects of meteorology.  By becoming an American Meteorological Society member, students will benefit by establishing useful professional contacts, and effectively communicating with experienced and veteran local meteorologists and researchers. If you have any interest, stay in contact with ForecastGMU about membership in our upcoming AMS chapter.

Not from George Mason or the surrounding region, but are interested in joining a local AMS chapter? Be sure to check out the American Metrological Society’s Chapter Directory. After further research, if you discover there is no chapter in your area, don’t worry, you can start your own!

Just be sure to meet the following requirements:
  1. Five signatories that are also members of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). To become a member in AMS, click here.
  2.  If you are starting a student chapter, two faculty members must be signatories and one of those faculty members must be selected as a faculty advisor. Faculty members must also be members of AMS.
  3. Finally, a petition of authorization must be sent to the Secretary-Treasurer of the American Meteorological Society.  (To start a local chapter, five signatures are required, if you seek a student chapter, seven signatures are required)
Be on the lookout for the GMU American Meteorological Society! As always, if you have any interest or questions please feel free to contact ForecastGMU.
